Review by Michael Turney MikeyDude's Modular Helmet Comparison. I recently went on a quest for a modular helmet. You know... the ones that have the flip up face? I tried on many. Price Range: $215-$265Pricing Source: MikeyDude First, I tried the Nolan N100E. Great looking helmet and it fit in all the right places.... but one. It has a real nifty quick click chin strap. This is a plastic piece that fits into another plastic piece. The problem is that it hit right in the middle of my Adams apple. Not comfy at all. Price Range: $125-$175Pricing Source: MikeyDude Second, I tried a Vega Summit II Modular. It passed all the tests but one. When I tapped on the helmet it sounded like a Sub-woofer in a low-rider. It also has the side padding set in such a way that it channels air right towards your ears... very noisy.
Price Range: $225-$260Pricing Source: MikeyDude Third, I tried the KBC FFR Modular. This helmet it rated to ride with the face shield in the up position to 80 MPH. That was very attractive to me. This helmet didn't fit at all. It was snug in all the right places, but it pulled right off my head in the pull over test.
Price Range: $215-$250Pricing Source: www.BizRate.com Finally I tried the HJC Symax. I was avoiding this helmet because of the high prices in my area. It turns out, this is the best selling helmet in my area... that's why. It fit perfectly and didn't come off. It didn't move in any of the shake tests and it felt very comfortable. This helmet is available in almost every cycle shop and Harley has them too (for about $100 more than anyone else. Gotta pay for that logo). After I found the helmet that I wanted I shopped all over town. I ended up buying off of the internet and saved well over $100 for a brand new helmet. The bottom line is, find one that fits correctly and is comfortable. If it's uncomfortable, you either won't wear it, or you'll constantly be thinking about how uncomfortable it is while you should be thinking of the road. The modular helmets are great in that you can pop up the face at stop lights... and when you go get gas. You don't need to take it off. They are DOT approved, but not Snell. All I can say is that I love my Symax, and would definite buy another (and plan to when it's time for a new one). We liked it so well, my wife bought one too... and it fit perfectly. Cruise safe! |
